President Évariste Ndayishimiye has called on Burundians to remain vigilant in preserving the country’s hard-won national unity, as the nation marked the opening day of a three-day thanksgiving crusade celebrating his fifth anniversary in office.
Addressing thousands gathered at Ingoma Stadium in Gitega on Thursday, June 19, the Burundian leader hailed the unprecedented level of unity achieved under his presidency, describing it as a collective triumph over decades of division rooted in colonial legacies.
“For the first time, Burundi is united, its people forming a single identity beyond ethnic divisions,” declared President Ndayishimiye.
He attributed this milestone to divine intervention and expressed gratitude to the people of Burundi for embracing the spirit of reconciliation and cooperation.
He emphasized, however, that unity must not be taken for granted, warning: “We must remain constantly vigilant to protect these precious gains from forces that seek to divide us.”
The President also commended the resilience and determination of Burundians in confronting challenges, noting that the nation was now walking together “towards development” with shared purpose and responsibility.
The spiritual tone of the event was set by Reverend Denise Nkurunziza, who, drawing from Numbers 11:25–30, encouraged the faithful not to forget God’s blessings.
She urged Burundians to receive the Holy Spirit and to use their words to build, not divide.
The crusade, rich in symbolism and celebration, opened with a vibrant parade led by the Presidential Couple, joined by senior government officials and representatives from Gitega province.
Attendees wore a traditional loincloth emblematic of their regional identity and unity, reinforcing the event’s theme of national cohesion.
Songs of praise, spirited worship, and the sound of trumpets echoed throughout the stadium, signaling what many in attendance saw as a moment of both spiritual and national victory.
The ceremony was officially inaugurated by the First Lady, Her Excellency Angeline Ndayishimiye, who led the opening prayer.
Her address emphasized the importance of spiritual reflection and collective thanksgiving for the country’s progress over the past five years.
