Ghana: Kennedy Agyapong gains momentum as 268 former MMDCEs back his NPP flagbearer bid

Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential ambitions have received a major boost after 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) declared their support for his candidacy in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race.
The show of support came during a courtesy visit to Agyapong’s private office in Accra on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
The former MMDCEs, who served under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, stated their belief that the six-term Member of Parliament possesses the leadership experience and grassroots appeal needed to guide the NPP to victory in the 2028 general elections.
“This endorsement is part of a growing wave of support for Mr. Agyapong’s bid to become the NPP’s next presidential candidate,” said a spokesperson for the delegation.
A video of the meeting, which circulated widely on social media, showed Agyapong warmly receiving his guests, further signaling the significance of the endorsement.
Kennedy Agyapong, who previously contested the party’s 2023 presidential primaries but lost to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has remained an influential figure within the party.
His supporters argue that he has the charisma and strategic vision to unite the party base and appeal to voters beyond traditional NPP strongholds.
The endorsement from the former MMDCEs—widely seen as key operatives at the grassroots level—could provide Agyapong with a critical edge as the NPP’s internal contest intensifies.
Party insiders note that their influence in local constituencies may help consolidate support for his candidacy.
The NPP’s presidential primaries are scheduled for January 31, 2026, following a decision by the party’s National Executive Committee earlier in June.
The early timeline is intended to give the eventual flagbearer ample time to campaign ahead of the 2028 national elections.
Other prominent figures expected to contest include Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Agriculture; Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former NPP General Secretary; and Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Though Dr. Bawumia has yet to officially declare his intentions, he remains a leading contender, bolstered by recent pledges of support from over 60 MPs.
Meanwhile, Agyapong’s momentum was further amplified earlier this week when former Western North Regional Minister, Mr. Obeng, gifted him a mansion in East Legon during the lawmaker’s 65th birthday celebration. Obeng also pledged financial and spiritual backing for Agyapong’s campaign.
With endorsements mounting and the race heating up, the NPP is set for a competitive and closely watched leadership contest that could shape the political future of Ghana.
