Ousmane Dione, Vice President of the World Bank for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, has reiterated the institution’s commitment to backing Tunisia’s National Water Distribution Utility (SONEDE) in implementing future water management and infrastructure projects.
During a recent visit to the Billy Water Treatment Complex, Dione, accompanied by a high-level delegation, reviewed the facility’s water supply sources, including water from northern Tunisia and the Medjerda Canal.
He also examined the various components of the treatment complex, which plays a crucial role in the country’s water distribution system.
The visit was attended by key officials, including Abdelhamid Mnejja, SONEDE’s Executive Administrator, and Nôomen Mreyhi, the central director of production.
A statement released by SONEDE highlighted the significance of the visit in strengthening collaboration between Tunisia and the World Bank on vital water resource management initiatives.
Earlier in the week, on December 10, 2024, Prime Minister Kamel Maddouri hosted Ousmane Dione and his delegation at the Government Palace in Kasbah.
The meeting underscored Tunisia’s ongoing efforts to improve water distribution infrastructure and address the challenges posed by water scarcity in the region.
The World Bank’s reaffirmation of support comes at a time when Tunisia is seeking innovative and sustainable solutions to enhance water security and distribution across the country.
Tunisia’s partnership with international institutions like the World Bank reflects a shared commitment to addressing critical challenges in water resource management while ensuring long-term sustainability.
SONEDE’s ongoing projects and collaboration with global partners aim to fortify Tunisia’s water infrastructure, supporting the nation’s economic development and improving access to clean water for its population.
