PAICV plans national council meeting ahead of key internal elections
The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) has announced its upcoming National Council meeting, scheduled for January 4th and 5th, 2025.
The meeting will focus on determining the date for the direct election of the party’s new president, setting the agenda for the next congress, and finalizing the number of delegates who will attend the event.
Nuias Silva, Vice-President of the PAICV, shared the news in a press briefing following a meeting of the party’s Political Commission held the day before.
Silva emphasized that this is a time for reflection on the party’s recent achievements and growth.
“This is a democratic journey in which the PAICV is emerging stronger, consolidating itself as the largest local party in Cape Verde, both in terms of the number of chambers governed and the population under its direct influence,” Silva remarked.
“This victory reflects the trust the people of Cape Verde place in our party to lead the country, first at the municipal level and, starting in 2026, at the national level.”
A key consequence of the PAICV’s recent municipal victory has been its leadership within the National Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde (ANMCV).
Silva described this body as essential in “converging the aspirations of municipalities into concrete policies that promote local development and address issues directly in communities.”
Although he reaffirmed the democratic and collaborative nature of the party, Silva did not confirm whether he was personally interested in leading the ANMCV.
“There is no personal drive on my part for this leadership,” he explained.
“The focus will always be on finding solutions that meet the needs of municipalities and the population.
The most important thing is to build bridges and work with all mayors, regardless of their party, to ensure effective local governance.”
Regarding the potential renewal of the PAICV’s leadership, Silva stated that the party is awaiting a decision from current President Rui Semedo.
“We have a leader who deserves the necessary time to reflect and communicate his position.
If Rui Semedo chooses not to continue, I will be available to contribute in a collaborative and inclusive way to the creation of a strong agenda that mobilizes the party and the country,” Silva assured.
However, he emphasized that the priority remains to strengthen unity and cohesion within the party while preparing for the strategic steps ahead.
“We are all called to contribute to building a broad platform for mobilization, including different voices and ideas, with the aim of changing the course of the country in 2026,” Silva concluded.
