AfDB approves $140 million loan to Eswatini for key road infrastructure upgrades
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $140.6 million loan to Eswatini to finance the first phase of a critical road infrastructure improvement program.
This project aims to upgrade 105.9 kilometers of roads, connecting underserved regions and fostering economic growth in the country.
Announced on December 9, 2024, in Abidjan, the loan targets the development of better national and regional road networks to enhance mobility in both urban and rural areas.
“The project will contribute significantly to poverty reduction by creating well-paying jobs for youth in economically disadvantaged regions such as Lubombo and Shiselweni,” said Moono Mupotola, AfDB’s Country Manager for Eswatini.
“Through targeted vocational training and apprenticeship programs, at least 200 young people will gain formal qualifications and market-relevant technical skills.”
Unlocking Economic Potential in Marginalized Regions
Lubombo and Shiselweni, known for their agricultural potential, have faced socio-economic stagnation due to inadequate road infrastructure.
Despite abundant natural resources, these regions struggle with limited job opportunities and a skills gap among the youth.
The road upgrades will include climate-resilient paved roads, enabling year-round access within the regions and connecting them to the broader sub-region.
Key segments targeted for improvement include the Siphofaneni-Sithobelath-Maloma-Nsoko (MR14) and Maloma-Siphambanweni (MR21) routes.
The roads will be modernized to a 12.3-meter width, with 2-meter-wide paved shoulders on both sides, along with bridges to ensure safer and quicker commutes.
The improved infrastructure is expected to reduce travel times and vehicle operating costs, providing a significant boost to regional commerce.
Additional Infrastructure and Reforms
The project also includes the construction of a weighbridge along the MR14 route to monitor axle loads.
Sectoral reforms will focus on updating policy frameworks for road safety and implementing an axle load control program, addressing gaps in enforcement.
This initiative represents a major step towards addressing Eswatini’s infrastructure challenges, unlocking the economic potential of its underserved regions, and creating sustainable opportunities for its youth.
