Déthié Fall, leader of the Republican Party for Progress (PRP), has resigned from his seat in Senegal’s National Assembly.
Fall was set to replace Barthélémy Dias, the mayor of Dakar, who was removed from his position as a deputy on Friday, December 6, 2024.
The announcement came via a Facebook post, where Fall reiterated his commitment to integrity and transparency.
“Following the removal of the head of the Sam sa Kaddu list by the National Assembly, my position on this list became active.
Before the Senegalese people, to whom my dedication is well known, I had promised to relinquish this seat should it become mine due to my resignation from this coalition and my support for the Pastef list led by President Ousmane Sonko.
I am keeping my word because it is dear to me,” Fall declared.
He wished the best for the National Assembly and congratulated its president, extending his support to the Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Pastef leader Ousmane Sonko, whom he credited for their leadership and values.
Fallout from Dias’ Removal
Barthélémy Dias lost his seat following a request from the Minister of Justice, invoking Article 61 of the Constitution and Article 51 of parliamentary rules.
This followed the Supreme Court’s upholding of Dias’ conviction for “fatal blows” in the 2011 killing of Ndiaga Diouf.
Dias, who led the Sam sa Kaddu coalition in the November 17, 2024, legislative elections, was among the key opposition figures in Senegal.
His removal and Fall’s subsequent resignation mark significant shifts in the country’s political landscape.
The developments come amid increasing political tension as Senegal prepares for pivotal elections, with heightened scrutiny on coalition dynamics and leadership transitions.
