Nigeria expands maritime capacity with landmark Lekki port alliance
The Lekki Port in Nigeria has taken a significant step toward transforming the nation’s maritime industry with the launch of a strategic alliance between global shipping giants COSCO, ONE (Ocean Network Express), and ZIM.
This milestone was marked by the recent arrival of the E. A. Centaurus, the largest COSCO vessel to ever dock in Nigeria.
Measuring 277 meters and with a capacity of 7,000 TEUs, the vessel’s docking signals a new era of enhanced cargo handling at the deep-sea Lekki Port.
Pioneering a Maritime Hub in West Africa
Christophe Cassang, CEO of Lekki Freeport Terminal, lauded the development as a turning point for the region.
“Our vision is to establish a leading maritime hub in West Africa,” he said.
Cassang emphasized the importance of partnerships with COSCO, ONE, and ZIM in expanding Nigeria’s global trade connections.
“With a highly skilled team, state-of-the-art technology, and cutting-edge infrastructure, we are well-positioned to meet the evolving demands of the shipping industry and our clients,” he added.
The alliance is expected to significantly enhance Lekki Port’s operational efficiency and boost its standing as a key player in regional and international trade.
A Testament to Nigeria’s Maritime Growth
Du Ruogang, Managing Director of Lekki Port, highlighted the broader implications of the alliance for Nigeria’s maritime future.
“This development underscores our commitment to transforming Nigeria’s shipping industry.
The biweekly arrival of vessels from COSCO, ONE, and ZIM signals increased cargo volumes and improved efficiency for businesses nationwide,” Ruogang stated.
Catalyzing Economic Growth
Adesuwa Ladoja, CEO of Lagos Free Zone, praised the alliance as transformative for the region.
“The introduction of COSCO, ONE, and ZIM services will drive substantial foreign direct investment into the Lagos Free Zone,” Ladoja said.
She noted that with four major shipping lines now operating at Lekki Port, businesses have access to world-class facilities, enabling the import of raw materials and export of finished goods.
“This collaboration supports economic revitalization, positioning Lekki as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s maritime and industrial growth,” she added.
The partnership underscores Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its global trade links, setting a new benchmark for efficiency and innovation in West Africa’s maritime sector.
