Senegalese armed forces have dismantled two major illegal gold mining sites in the Falémé region, seizing nearly 100 generators and extensive mining equipment, according to a statement from the Directorate of Public Relations of the Armed Forces (Dirpa).
As part of “Operation Kanoumering,” military personnel from Zone 4 carried out the latest raid on November 23 in Digou, confiscating 30 generators, explosives, and other tools used for unauthorized gold extraction.
This follows an earlier operation on November 21 in Segoto, near the Malian border, where 65 generators and additional mining equipment were seized.
The operations are part of Senegal’s broader efforts to curb illegal mining in the region.
These activities not only threaten the local environment but also pose significant security risks in areas bordering neighboring countries.
Dirpa emphasized that the military’s ongoing initiatives serve three core objectives: ensuring security in the Falémé region, fostering trust with local communities, and strictly enforcing bans on mining activities around the Falémé River.
“This approach reflects our commitment to both environmental preservation and bolstering security in sensitive border regions,” the statement read.
The operations highlight the Senegalese military’s dual mission to safeguard the region’s ecological integrity and maintain control over strategic areas.
Zone 4 military units are maintaining a constant presence in the region, underscoring their determination to combat illicit activities and enforce anti-mining regulations effectively.
Illegal mining in the Falémé region has long been a challenge for Senegal, exacerbating environmental degradation and contributing to insecurity.
