Angola confirms first case of Mpox in Luanda

Angola has reported its first case of Mpox, a viral disease that has raised global health concerns, marking a significant moment in the nation’s public health landscape.

The Ministry of Health announced the case late Saturday, confirming that the infected individual is a 28-year-old woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

She is currently in isolation in the capital, Luanda, while authorities monitor her close contacts closely.

The health ministry issued a statement detailing immediate steps taken to prevent further spread of the virus.

“We are actively disinfecting affected areas, tracking and tracing contacts, and conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation,” the ministry said.

Health officials have emphasized the importance of stringent hygiene practices and urged residents to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with the disease.

These include fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, widespread rashes, or lesions on the mucous membranes.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, was first identified in laboratory monkeys in 1958.

It is an infectious disease that spreads primarily through bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials.

Though initially considered rare, Mpox has made headlines worldwide due to its recent surge in cases, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in August 2024.

This was the WHO’s second such declaration within two years.

In response to the confirmed case, the Angolan government has assured the public that it is taking all necessary measures to contain the outbreak and prevent further infections.

Authorities have called for calm and urged the community to remain vigilant as they continue to manage the situation.

They also reiterated their commitment to providing timely updates on the evolving epidemiological situation.

The government’s proactive approach aims to mitigate any potential spread and protect the public’s health, while maintaining transparency and communication throughout the investigation.
