African development bank commits $511 million to fund four Niger government programs

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $511 million in funding to support four key government programs in Niger, Lamin Barroco, the AfDB’s West Africa Regional Director, announced on Sunday.

Speaking during a meeting with Nigerien government officials in Niamey, Barroco detailed the allocation of funds, highlighting that the first program would provide budgetary support aimed at enhancing essential services, amounting to $284.96 million.

The second tranche, valued at $119.84 million, is earmarked for a project to improve access to potable water and sanitation services in the cities of Zinder and Mirriah, along with surrounding villages.

Barroco also outlined the other two areas of funding, stating, “The remaining allocations will focus on the Integrated Youth Entrepreneurship Development Program in Niger’s agricultural sector with an investment of $93.21 million, as well as the second phase of the Africa Disaster Risk Financing Program (ADRIFi-NIGER PHASE II), which will receive $13.31 million.”

The AfDB’s support underscores its commitment to strengthening key development sectors in Niger and bolstering the country’s resilience to challenges, ranging from basic service provision to youth employment and disaster management.
