Major hidden weapons discovered in northern Niger amid rising security tensions

The Nigerien military has announced the discovery of a significant weapons hidden in the northern part of the country.

Hidden within a cave in the region of Tchirozérine, contained a variety of heavy weaponry, including an RPG-7 rocket launcher, nine ready-to-use RPG-7 rockets, 11 RPG-7 magazines, an automatic weapon, 566 rounds of 762×54 caliber ammunition, and a rifle grenade.

In a statement, the military revealed that operations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the stash.

While the situation is under control, the military acknowledged that armed groups affiliated with criminal networks have intensified their activities.

These groups have attempted to infiltrate and conduct reconnaissance operations targeting several defense and security camps in Niamey, the capital.

“The security situation remains under control, but we are aware of growing threats from groups with links to criminal organizations,” a military spokesperson said.

The discovery of the weapons highlights the escalating security concerns facing Niger, particularly in its border regions.

The country has long been under threat from various militant groups, including those controlling southern Libya, as well as terrorist factions linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), armed groups based in northern Mali, and the notorious Boko Haram.

As the military continues its search for the perpetrators, the discovery serves as a stark reminder of the complex security challenges Niger faces in the Sahel region, where terrorist and criminal activity continues to destabilize countries and undermine efforts to restore peace and security.
