German ambassador celebrates unity day, highlights strengthened ties with Benin

During the commemoration of German Unity Day, Dr. Stefan Buchwald, Germany’s Ambassador to Benin, underscored the deepening ties between the two nations.

Held in the presence of Beninese officials and international guests, the event served as a testament to the robust and multifaceted partnership that has evolved over the years.

Ambassador Buchwald highlighted significant strides in bilateral relations, emphasizing cooperation in key areas such as financial governance, decentralization, renewable energy, and education.

With an investment portfolio totaling approximately €450 million, Germany’s commitment to Benin’s development is evident through a range of initiatives led by the German Development Bank (KfW) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in collaboration with Beninese partners.

He also recalled the impactful visit of Germany’s Development Minister earlier this year, who observed firsthand the progress of joint development projects.

Trade relations between the two countries continue to grow, with Benin welcoming German businesses interested in areas like construction, infrastructure, and medical technology.

Prominent German firms such as Julius Berger and Heidelberg Materials are contributing to major undertakings, including the modernization of the Port of Cotonou.

On the cultural front, the German Embassy organized numerous events over the past year, including a graffiti mural project featuring artists from both countries, showcasing vibrant cultural exchanges.

In response to security challenges within the Sahel region, Germany has bolstered its cooperation with Benin by providing military equipment aimed at enhancing the nighttime operational capacity of Benin’s armed forces.

Additionally, Germany supported the launch of the Coastal States Stability Mechanism, which focuses on conflict prevention.

Concluding his address, Ambassador Buchwald expressed his optimism for the future, pledging continued support to ensure that the bond between Benin and Germany grows even stronger, bringing shared prosperity and lasting stability.
