Russia backs benin’s efforts to restore relations with Sahel coalition nations

Russia has expressed support for Benin’s steps toward normalizing relations with members of the Sahel Coalition, which includes Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, according to the Russian ambassador to Benin and Togo, Igor Evdokimov.

Evdokimov emphasized that Moscow welcomes Benin’s commitment to rebuilding ties with the coalition nations and expressed optimism that diplomatic efforts could help resolve outstanding issues between the parties.

Benin, a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has been deeply affected by the regional tensions stemming from recent political upheaval in Niger.

Following the military coup that ousted Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, Niger withdrew from ECOWAS and aligned itself with the Sahel Coalition.

In response, ECOWAS imposed sanctions on Niger and raised the possibility of military intervention, leading to the closure of the border between Niger and Benin.

This border closure disrupted the transport of Niger’s oil through the pipeline to Benin’s Sim Bouji port, dealing a significant blow to Benin’s economy.

Despite economic losses, Benin has reopened its border with Niger, hoping that Niger will reciprocate.

Evdokimov commended Benin’s efforts, stressing the importance of dialogue to secure a mutually beneficial outcome for all involved.

Months of mediation efforts, involving China, which has been overseeing construction of the pipeline, led to a partial breakthrough between Benin and Niger.

In August, the two countries resumed oil flow through the pipeline, a positive signal of renewed cooperation. This progress suggests potential for further reconciliation and economic stability in the region.

Russia’s endorsement comes as part of its broader strategy to strengthen ties within West Africa, where Moscow’s influence has grown in recent years.

Ambassador Evdokimov’s statement highlights Russia’s interest in fostering stability and economic development through diplomatic engagement in the Sahel region.
