Niger floods claim 27 lives since early June

Severe flooding in Niger has claimed the lives of at least 27 people and injured 23 others since the beginning of June, according to the Directorate General of Civil Protection.

The devastating impact of the floods has been highlighted in a report titled “The Flood Situation as of July 3, 2024,” which was accessed by Anadolu Agency.

The report details that fourteen individuals drowned while thirteen others died when their homes collapsed under the strain of the flooding.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, the floods have affected 10,655 people, causing significant damage to homes, livestock, granaries, and shops.

The floods are a result of the heavy rains that have marked the onset of the rainy season, which typically spans from June to September in Niger.

This year’s early and intense rainfall has exacerbated the situation, leading to widespread destruction and displacement.

The Nigerien rainy season, stretching from June to September, brings both relief and peril.

While essential for agriculture, the rains often lead to severe flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas.

The floods this year have once again exposed the fragility of the region’s infrastructure and the urgent need for enhanced flood management and response strategies.

In the preceding rainy season, by September 11, 2023, the Nigerien Ministry of Humanitarian Action had recorded 41 deaths, 53 injuries, and 137,797 people affected by floods.

These recurring disasters underscore the chronic challenges faced by the country, including inadequate drainage systems, poor urban planning, and the impacts of climate change.

The government and humanitarian organizations are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to those affected.

However, the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed local capacities, necessitating increased international assistance.

Emergency shelters, food supplies, and medical aid are urgently needed to address the immediate needs of the flood victims.
