Chadian president confirms elections will proceed on schedule despite devastating floods

Chadian President Mohamed Idriss Déby has assured the nation that upcoming legislative and local elections will take place as scheduled, despite the severe flooding that has gripped the country in recent months.

“The flood situation will not impact the progress of the electoral process,” Déby emphasized in a public statement.

Chad’s electoral commission has set December 29, 2024, as the date for the first legislative elections since 2011.

These elections follow the presidential polls held eight months ago, which marked the end of a three-year transitional period in the country’s governance.

Candidate registration for the elections officially began on Saturday, October 19, and will remain open until October 28.

In recent months, Chad has been hit by unprecedented floods, which have caused widespread devastation.

Approximately 600 people have lost their lives, and nearly two million have been affected by the disaster, leaving large parts of the country paralyzed.

Despite the challenges posed by the natural disaster, President Déby’s government is determined to maintain the election timeline, ensuring that the political process remains on course.

The upcoming legislative elections are seen as a crucial step toward stabilizing Chad’s political landscape following years of turmoil and transition.
