The governor of Burkina Faso’s Djôrô region, Siaka Barro, visited the lowland rice fields of Zopiélé in the commune of Ouessa on Tuesday to encourage local producers and review progress in the ongoing agricultural campaign.
During his visit, Barro praised the dedication of farmers and the support provided by technical services, emphasizing the importance of sustained effort for a successful harvest.
The governor was accompanied by Innocent Ouattara, High Commissioner of the Ioba province, Ismaël Sanogo, Prefect and President of the Special Delegation of Ouessa, and the regional director of agriculture.
Together, they observed the cultivation practices across 42 hectares of rice fields, managed by 158 producers, including 42 women. With proper care and technical support, the fields are expected to yield 168 tonnes this season.
Farmers in Zopiélé benefit from government-backed assistance, including the provision of inputs and ploughing services, as well as advisory support from agricultural agents.
Barro noted the strong presence of technical staff and praised their contribution to improving agricultural productivity.
Observing the well-maintained fields at the stage of crop maturity, the governor highlighted the successful application of techniques promoted under the presidential initiative for food sovereignty.
He told the farmers: “We encourage you to continue your efforts to support the highest authorities in achieving food self-sufficiency.”
The early signs from the campaign suggest a promising harvest, generating optimism among producers and local authorities alike.
Before arriving in Zopiélé, Governor Barro also visited the lowland rice fields of Boulmoutéon in the commune of Koper, underscoring the regional administration’s commitment to monitoring agricultural activities and reinforcing support for farmers across the Djôrô region.
This visit reflects Burkina Faso’s broader strategy to boost domestic rice production, strengthen food security, and empower local farming communities through technical assistance and government-led initiatives.
