Chadian security forces have apprehended a man suspected of orchestrating the 2022 Sandana massacre in the south of the country, more than three years after the attack.
The arrest was announced Thursday in Harazé, the administrative centre of the Haraze-Mangueigne department, where the suspect was presented to local authorities. His identity has not been publicly disclosed.
According to General Ismat Issakha Acheikh, the government delegate to Salamat province, the suspect was detained on the outskirts of Harazé by defence and security forces.
“This arrest reflects the commitment and vigilance of our forces in safeguarding communities and their property,” he said.
The suspect had been on the run since the massacre, which occurred on 9 February 2022 in the Moyen-Chari region.
Reports indicate he was attempting to cross into the Central African Republic at the time of his capture and was found in possession of military-grade weapons.
Local media suggest the individual admitted to being affiliated with the Séléka, a Central African rebel group.
The Sandana massacre erupted following the discovery of a herder’s body in public.
In retaliation, armed herders attacked the village, resulting in the deaths of twelve residents.
At the time, the main suspect evaded security forces, leaving the case unresolved for years.
The capture represents a significant step in Chad’s ongoing efforts to improve regional security and prevent further intercommunal violence. Authorities have emphasised that the investigation and prosecution of individuals responsible for past atrocities remain a priority to restore trust and stability in affected communities.
Security analysts note that incidents such as the Sandana massacre underscore the challenges faced by Chad in managing cross-border threats and the influence of armed groups operating in neighbouring countries.
The arrest of a key suspect may deter similar attacks and strengthen public confidence in the ability of Chadian forces to protect vulnerable populations.
As judicial proceedings begin, local communities are watching closely, hoping that accountability will bring closure to families affected by the 2022 tragedy.
