Zambia is preparing to send its first-ever beef shipment to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday, marking a milestone in the country’s agricultural trade and regional integration efforts.
President Hakainde Hichilema announced the historic export during a meeting with traditional leaders ahead of the Southern Province Investment and Trade Expo in Livingstone.
He described the shipment as a major step toward unlocking the potential of Zambia’s livestock sector and expanding trade opportunities across the region.
The initial shipment will come from the Mukobela and Mungaila chiefdoms in Southern Province, long considered the heart of Zambia’s beef industry.
The cattle will be processed at a modern abattoir in Kalomo, reflecting the government’s commitment to upgrading agricultural infrastructure and enhancing export capabilities.
“For the first time, our beef will reach neighbouring markets, demonstrating both the quality of our livestock and the effectiveness of our modernization efforts,” President Hichilema said.
Historically, Zambia’s beef industry has primarily served domestic consumption, with exports limited by infrastructure and regulatory challenges. Recent reforms and investments in processing facilities have now enabled the country to meet regional demand, particularly in the DRC, where appetite for high-quality meat is rising.
This initiative forms part of Zambia’s broader strategy to diversify its economy, increase rural incomes, and strengthen trade links within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). By leveraging its agricultural potential, the government aims to promote inclusive growth and reinforce food security across the region.
Agricultural exports, especially beef, are seen as a key driver of Zambia’s economic development, offering opportunities to create jobs, stimulate rural economies, and integrate the country more fully into regional markets.
With this first shipment, Zambia signals its readiness to compete in regional agricultural markets while supporting long-term economic diversification and fostering stronger trade relations with its neighbours.
