In a significant political realignment in Benin, several activists linked to the Olivier Boko Movement have officially joined the Progressive Union for Renewal (UPR), signaling a strategic consolidation ahead of upcoming elections.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Cotonou.
The move was formalized by Arsène Fangninou on behalf of the “Olivier Boko Movement Consultation Framework,” expressing a clear commitment to align with the political direction of the UPR under Professor Joseph Djogbénou.
“We have, from afar, proposed Mr. Olivier Boko, but God has disposed Mr. Romuald Wadagni to continue the efforts of the dynamic of continuity,” Fangninou declared, framing the rally as “a return to the fold of the prodigal child.”
Fangninou further urged supporters to “close ranks under the shadow of the great Baobab, without political calculations,” emphasizing unity and strategic positioning for the forthcoming electoral cycle. He also highlighted the importance of regaining the “forgiveness and confidence of the Head of State.”
The ceremony was attended by top UPR officials, including Secretary General Gérard Gbénonchi, Director of Communications Anique F. Djimadja, Party Spokesperson Christian Parfait Ahoyo, and members of the Political Bureau, Franck Kpassassi and Cyrille Tohouénou.
Gbénonchi praised the move as “a sincere and courageous commitment” and assured that “no one will be judged for their past, but involved for their present commitment.”
As a sign of full integration, representatives from affiliated structures—including the National Rally, OB Nurseries, FEDOB, the Disciples of Olivier Boko, the OB Fan Club, and OB Ambassadors—received the party’s statutes, formally becoming channels for their respective constituencies within the Progressive Union for Renewal.
This development marks a pivotal step in the UPR’s strategy of political openness and consolidation, as it seeks to strengthen its base and broaden its appeal in the lead-up to national elections.
While the formal absorption of Olivier Boko’s associates may signal the fading of independent OB structures, the political influence and networks cultivated under Boko’s legacy are expected to continue shaping Benin’s evolving political landscape.
