Zimbabwe: Robert Mugabe Jr. faces drug trafficking charges amid widening investigation

Robert Mugabe Jr., the 33-year-old son of the late former Zimbabwean president, appeared in a Harare court on Thursday facing charges of drug trafficking, as police expanded their investigation into a suspected narcotics network.
Authorities said Mugabe Jr. was arrested on Wednesday morning after driving the wrong way down a one-way street in the capital. During the stop, police reportedly discovered several bags of cannabis in his vehicle.
Five other individuals have since been detained in connection with the case. Police confirmed that investigators seized a total of 25 bags of marijuana and six ecstasy tablets. The arrests suggest a larger operation than initially anticipated, raising concerns about organized drug distribution in the city.
The alleged network is believed to involve Mitchel Jackson, Simbarashe Kaseke, Wellington Ncube, Phillip Munetsi Chiyangwa, and Tanaka Kashamba. Police spokespersons have stated that investigations are ongoing and that further arrests or charges could follow as authorities probe the extent of the alleged trafficking ring.
This high-profile case comes at a time when Zimbabwean law enforcement is intensifying efforts to crack down on drug-related crime, with a focus on both domestic distribution networks and cross-border smuggling.
Mugabe Jr.’s involvement has drawn significant public attention due to his family’s political prominence and the legacy of his father, Robert Mugabe, who ruled the country for nearly four decades.
Observers note that the case could have wider political and social implications, highlighting ongoing concerns about organized crime and drug trafficking in Zimbabwe’s urban centres. Courts have yet to set a date for a full trial, and Mugabe Jr. remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
Authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the alleged network to come forward, signalling that the investigation remains active and that law enforcement is committed to dismantling the group behind the suspected trafficking activities.
