Moroccan avocado exports have reached unprecedented levels in the 2024/2025 season, marking a major milestone in the country’s agricultural trade with Switzerland.
According to data from the Swiss Federal Customs Administration, shipments soared to $12.2 million, equivalent to 3,800 tonnes, reflecting a dramatic 2.7-fold increase compared to the previous season and nearly four times higher than figures recorded in 2021/2022.
This exceptional growth has propelled Morocco to second place among the largest avocado suppliers to the Swiss market, overtaking long-established exporters such as Spain, Israel, and Chile.
Peru continues to dominate the market, accounting for more than 40% of Switzerland’s avocado imports. However, Morocco’s share has now surpassed 15%, cementing its position as a leading player in the global avocado trade.
The achievement marks the culmination of a two-decade-long expansion in Morocco’s avocado industry. The country’s first shipments to Switzerland in the 2003/2004 season weighed a modest 704 kilograms. Volumes steadily climbed over the years, surpassing 100 tonnes by the 2011/2012 season and exceeding 500 tonnes by 2019/2020.
The latest figures show that Moroccan avocado exports peaked in February 2025, reaching 862 tonnes – representing roughly 40% of all avocados traded in the Swiss market that month.
The surge is largely driven by rising Swiss demand for avocados. Imports reached 24,300 tonnes this season, up 14% from the previous year and 29% higher than in 2021/2022.
Morocco’s strong performance in the Swiss market underscores the country’s growing influence in the global avocado supply chain. The sector’s rapid development reflects increasing global demand for the fruit and highlights Morocco’s capacity to compete with traditional exporters by expanding its production and export capabilities.
With sustained demand in European markets, Morocco’s avocado industry appears poised for further growth, strengthening the country’s position as a key supplier in the years ahead.
