Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, presenting his country’s vision during the 80th session of the international body.
Ould Merzoug outlined a world divided into two spheres, with stark disparities in development and progress
“Humanity must unify its efforts to find creative solutions that narrow this gap,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for collaborative action.
The minister condemned ongoing wars and conflicts, warning that they threaten humanity’s future.
He also drew attention to the escalating challenges of climate change and extremism, which, he said, amplify human suffering and demand a more effective role from the United Nations.
Addressing the conflict in Gaza, Ould Merzoug reiterated Mauritania’s stance against violence as a path to peace. “What our people in Gaza are being subjected to places the human conscience and the credibility of the international community at the center of a choice of fate,” he said, underscoring the moral and political urgency of the crisis.
The minister welcomed recent international efforts, including the recognition of a Palestinian state and a high-level conference co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. He described these developments as “encouraging” and indicative of a renewed global momentum toward resolving the Palestinian question.
Ould Merzoug’s address also called for renewed multilateral cooperation to tackle global inequalities, urging the international community to adopt innovative and inclusive solutions to pressing challenges.
His speech emphasized that peace, development, and human dignity remain interlinked objectives requiring coordinated action across borders.
By framing global crises through both moral and strategic lenses, Mauritania’s Foreign Minister highlighted the country’s commitment to diplomacy, justice, and international engagement, positioning it as an advocate for unity in the face of global instability.
