Deep learning Indaba 2024: Africa emerges as a key player in artificial intelligence at Dakar summit
The Deep Learning Indaba 2024 is showcasing Africa’s growing influence in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) as the continent hosts its annual gathering in Dakar, Senegal, from September 1 to 7.
This flagship event brings together researchers, professionals, and AI enthusiasts, positioning itself as a crucial platform for exploring the unique challenges and opportunities of AI across Africa.
As Africa steadily cements its place on the global tech stage, this year’s sixth edition of the Deep Learning Indaba highlights the continent’s ambitions not just to adopt AI technologies but to actively shape them.
“It is crucial that Africans master this technology and understand its impacts to better adapt it to their local realities,” said Daouda Tandiang Djiba, one of the event’s main organizers.
He emphasized that AI has the potential to revolutionize sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and transportation, offering innovative solutions tailored to the continent’s specific needs.
This year, over 600 participants from across Africa and beyond have convened at the Amadou Mahtar Mbow University (UAM) in Dakar for a week of intensive learning and networking.
The 2024 edition emphasizes inclusivity and diversity, with organizers ensuring that even the most marginalized voices are heard.
Scholarships, mentorship programs, and other initiatives have been established to create a welcoming environment for all attendees, underscoring the event’s commitment to broadening access to AI education and opportunities.
Renowned speakers such as Samy Bengio from Apple and Isabel Valera from Saarland University are among the highlights of this year’s conference.
Key topics include responsible AI, climate-resilient AI solutions, and data science for health in Africa.
Specialized workshops are also being held to deepen participants’ technical knowledge and skills.
The Deep Learning Indaba is not just an annual conference; it represents a movement to strengthen the AI ecosystem in Africa.
By fostering collaborations with pan-African communities and international partners, the event aims to drive new research, spur innovation, and develop local talent.
The IndabaX, a local offshoot of the main event, has now expanded to 47 African countries, ensuring a sustained impact across the continent.
