Niger and Morocco have taken a significant step to strengthen their aviation ties, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at deepening technical cooperation in the civil aviation sector.
The agreement was formalized in Montreal during the 42nd assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The MoU, initialed in the presence of Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, and his Nigerien counterpart, Amadou Abdourahamane, outlines a framework for collaboration in aviation safety, the exchange of technical expertise, and the implementation of executive training programs. Officials emphasized that the initiative is designed to guarantee the highest levels of safety and security in international air transport.
“This memorandum of understanding will allow the two countries to further develop their cooperation in the air transport sector,” said Minister Kayouh. He added that the agreement aims to consolidate the presence of Royal Air Maroc and Niger’s national airline while opening opportunities for Nigerien pilots to train in Moroccan institutions.
The agreement establishes practical mechanisms for collaboration between Morocco’s General Directorate of Civil Aviation and Niger’s National Civil Aviation Agency. It reflects a shared ambition to strengthen Africa’s presence in the global aviation sector, aligning with Morocco’s long-term vision of becoming a regional hub linking the continent to the rest of the world.
During the ICAO assembly, the Moroccan delegation also held bilateral meetings with officials from other nations and international organizations to promote technical and operational cooperation in civil aviation and advance Morocco’s candidacy for the ICAO Council.
Looking ahead, Marrakech is set to host the 5th edition of the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) next year, providing a platform to showcase Moroccan expertise and contribute to the growth and integration of Africa’s civil aviation sector.
This agreement underscores a broader effort by Morocco to position itself as a key player in connecting African nations to international air transport networks while supporting capacity building and regional integration.
