Authorities in Benin have arrested a Physics-Chemistry-Technology teacher, who also worked as a sachet water seller, for allegedly committing fraud on the country’s electricity network.
The incident was reported by Libre Express and has raised concerns about illegal connections in the Dogbo commune.
According to the report, the teacher tampered with an electricity meter and created clandestine connections to supply multiple households and businesses in the Foncomè district.
The fraudulent installation enabled several properties to access electricity without paying for the service, violating regulations enforced by the Beninese Electricity Company (SBEE).
Following the teacher’s arrest, five users identified as beneficiaries of the illegal connections were also detained on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Authorities accuse them of knowingly connecting their homes and businesses to the unlawful installation.
The case has sparked strong reactions in the local community, where illegal connections remain a persistent challenge for SBEE. Residents have expressed frustration at the continued disruption caused by such practices, which not only threaten the company’s operations but also pose safety risks.
The arrested individuals are expected to face prosecution in the coming days, as authorities emphasize the importance of upholding the law and maintaining the integrity of the national electricity network. The SBEE has reiterated its commitment to combating electricity theft and safeguarding services for paying customers.
