Samy Boucalt, who claims to be the chief of staff of the Mapanes, was arrested on Sunday, 21 September 2025, following a series of incidents targeting Beninese residents in Gabon.
Videos circulating on social media showed Boucalt forcibly entering the businesses of Beninese nationals, demanding that they close and vacate their premises on Brice Oligui Nguema’s land.
The situation escalated after the allocation of market spaces in Lambaréné, which has sparked tensions between local authorities and the Beninese community.
Just days before Boucalt’s arrest, a protest was held in front of the Beninese consulate, with demonstrators demanding the departure of certain Beninese residents.
Concurrently, several videos surfaced online showing Boucalt, accompanied by two associates, intimidating business owners and enforcing closures.
“The man was seen in several videos circulating on social networks, intimidating and closing the businesses of Beninese living on Brice Oligui Nguema’s land,” reported local media.
Authorities acted swiftly, arresting Boucalt to restore order and reassure the affected community.
Reports indicate that Boucalt is a repeat offender. Previously known as a “roadblocker,” he was sentenced to 13 years in prison for serious crimes but was controversially released before completing his term.
The arrest has been widely welcomed by Beninese residents, who have expressed relief at the intervention of Gabonese authorities. Community leaders have called for continued vigilance to prevent further harassment and ensure the protection of businesses and livelihoods.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions in Lambaréné and underscores the challenges faced by foreign nationals navigating complex local dynamics. Gabonese authorities have pledged to maintain law and order while monitoring developments closely to prevent any escalation of violence.
The detention of Samy Boucalt marks a decisive response to acts of intimidation and a signal that such behaviour will not be tolerated, ensuring that residents can carry out their economic activities without fear.
