The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has lodged a formal complaint with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), alleging irregularities in the ongoing tallying of votes from the 2025 general elections.
Vitumbiko Mumba, the MCP’s presidential running mate, told reporters at a press conference on Friday night in Lilongwe that the party had identified cases of data manipulation at 13 polling stations.
The affected districts include Mangochi, Thyolo and Rumphi.
“Some people do not want the will of Malawians to be respected. Such behavior can’t go without being exposed,” Mumba said. He accused certain presiding officers and constituency returning officers of altering results in favour of some candidates, adding that some individuals had already been arrested.
Despite the allegations, Mumba commended the electoral body for professionalism in managing the vote. He urged Malawians to remain calm and patient as the process continues.
“Malawians want the election process to follow the law. We assure our supporters and the nation that their votes will be protected,” he said.
The MCP has demanded electoral audits for the 13 disputed tally sheets to safeguard the integrity of the outcome.
In response, MEC chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja said the commission had not yet received the official complaint from the MCP. However, she confirmed that the commission had begun releasing results from several district councils, including Mwanza, Luchenza Municipality, Kasungu Municipality and Likoma.
The allegations come as tensions rise over the credibility of the electoral process in Malawi, where accusations of irregularities have previously sparked political unrest. Both the MCP leadership and the MEC have appealed for peace as the nation awaits the official declaration of results.
