Algeria and Malaysia are moving towards a stronger partnership in both economic and parliamentary fields, following high-level talks held in Kuala Lumpur during the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
Deputy Speaker of Algeria’s National People’s Assembly, Mondher Bouden, represented Speaker Ibrahim Boughali at the event, where he engaged in discussions aimed at boosting bilateral relations and tapping into new investment opportunities.
Bouden was received by Johari Bin Abdul, President of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and the Assembly’s rotating president. Johari encouraged Algerian counterparts to take advantage of Malaysia’s vast potential for foreign investors, stressing that the Southeast Asian nation is eager to expand its economic links with Algeria.
Talks also explored avenues to deepen parliamentary cooperation. Both countries already maintain parliamentary friendship groups, a framework Bouden said could be strengthened to support broader ties. He also conveyed greetings from Assembly Speaker Boughali to his Malaysian counterpart, while praising Malaysia for its organisation of the international gathering.
On the sidelines of the meetings, Bouden held talks with Siti Rosemranti Haji Abdul Rahman, the outgoing Secretary-General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. He reaffirmed Algeria’s intention to expand its parliamentary partnerships beyond Africa, with a particular focus on ASEAN.
For her part, Siti Rosemranti commended Algeria’s parliamentary diplomacy, noting that it had demonstrated “effectiveness and efficiency” across international platforms.
The discussions highlight a shared ambition to translate parliamentary dialogue into tangible economic cooperation. Both sides signalled readiness to explore opportunities in trade and investment, positioning Algeria and Malaysia to build a partnership that extends across both political and economic domains.
