Burkina Faso’s customs authorities intercepted a major smuggling operation in Kaya on September 11, 2025, seizing an unprecedented haul of prohibited products, including cigarettes, amphetamines, and cyanide.
The operation highlighted the vigilance and professionalism of Burkinabe customs officers in combating cross-border crime.
The Dori Customs Mobile Brigade, tasked with tackling fraud and illicit trade, intercepted a suspicious convoy around 1 p.m. in the farming hamlet of Konéan, approximately ten kilometres from Kaya’s entrance in the Kuilsé region.
Officers noticed unusual activity around a first vehicle and discovered 221 cartons of foreign-brand cigarettes concealed in bags stamped “Faso Boro.”
A subsequent search of a second vehicle parked nearby revealed an even more alarming discovery: 193 drums of cyanide and 26 cartons of amphetamines.
In total, 440 packages of prohibited goods were confiscated, with an estimated street value approaching 80 million CFA francs. All items were transported to the Kaya Mobile Customs Brigade for legal processing.
The General Directorate of Customs praised the operation as a significant success. Director General Divisional Inspector Yves Kafando commended the officers for their professionalism and commitment.
“This seizure demonstrates the importance of vigilance and dedication in protecting public health, the environment, and the national economy,” he said.
He also urged all customs units across the country to maintain heightened alertness in the ongoing fight against smuggling and illicit trade.
The operation reflects Burkina Faso’s continued efforts to strengthen border security and curb illegal activities that threaten the nation’s safety and economic stability. It serves as a reminder of the risks posed by smuggling networks and the critical role of customs officials in safeguarding communities and national resources.
