Veteran politician Dalmas Otieno, a prominent figure in the country’s political landscape for decades, has died at the age of 80, his family and political leaders confirmed on Sunday.
President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Otieno as “a visionary leader who served the nation with honour, integrity, and distinction.” He added: “He was sharp, progressive, and industrious; a statesman whose ideas and leadership will continue to shape generations.
May God grant his family, friends and people of Rongo strength at this difficult time.”
Opposition leader Raila Odinga also paid tribute, hailing Otieno as “a committed public servant who believed in the power of effective and efficient public service as a cornerstone of good governance.”
Odinga extended his condolences to the people of Rongo and Migori County, saying Otieno’s contributions would not be forgotten.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula remembered Otieno as a calm, intellectual statesman who bridged divides and set an example of principled leadership.
“On behalf of the National Assembly and indeed the entire Parliament fraternity, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Rongo Constituency, who for many years entrusted him with leadership.
Kenya has lost a true son who dedicated his life to public service, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come,” Wetang’ula said.
Otieno first entered Parliament in 1988 as the MP for Rongo and later reclaimed the seat in 2007 and 2013. He held several ministerial positions, including Minister for Industrialisation (1988–1991), Minister of Labour & Human Resource Development, and Minister of Transport (1991–1996). Under President Mwai Kibaki, he served as Minister of State for Public Service.
A graduate of Applied Economics from Makerere University, Otieno also had a distinguished career in finance and economics. Family members and relatives gathered at his home on Sunday evening to mourn his passing, as tributes continue to pour in from across the country.
