Angola’s senior UNITA activist Clarindo Caputo has urged party members to embrace unity and renewed energy during the 14th Congress of the “Black Rooster,” describing the gathering as a pivotal moment to influence the nation’s future.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 3, during the “Bancada Parlamentar” program on Rádio Correio da Kianda, Caputo, a former journalist for the now-defunct Vorgan and a member of UNITA’s political committee residing in Denmark, highlighted the importance of the congress as a platform for renewal and democratic engagement.
“Multiple candidacies are a hallmark of the Galo Negro,” he said, referring to UNITA’s nickname.
“This demonstrates that it is a democratic party and serves as a model for other parties. It is crucial that we unite to change the course of the country.”
Caputo also addressed the discussion around the alleged candidacy of Rafael Massanga Savimbi.
He noted that “anyone who wants and feels qualified to run can follow the conclave’s regulations, and members will choose openly and consciously so that the party can continue its brand.”
The remarks underline UNITA’s ongoing efforts to balance internal democracy with a unified vision as Angola faces political and social challenges. Party leaders have emphasized that the 14th Congress represents an opportunity to inject fresh perspectives while reinforcing cohesion among members.
Analysts view UNITA’s approach as an example for other political parties in Angola, with Caputo’s call for unity signaling a strategic focus on consolidating influence and preparing for future national leadership contests.
The congress comes amid a broader political landscape in Angola where opposition parties are seeking to strengthen their positions and present coherent alternatives to the ruling party. Caputo’s advocacy for unity and transparent candidate selection aims to project stability and democratic principles within UNITA, reinforcing the party’s historical significance and contemporary relevance.
As the congress unfolds, members and observers will be closely monitoring how leadership decisions, candidate endorsements, and strategic debates will shape both UNITA’s trajectory and its role in shaping Angola’s political future.
