Egypt is strengthening its ties with Russia in the healthcare sector, with discussions underway on investment projects and the transfer of expertise in nuclear medicine and medical radioisotopes.
The initiative aims to position Egypt as a leading hub for advanced medical services and medical tourism.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare and General Supervisor of the Comprehensive Health Insurance Project, met with Russian Ambassador Georgiy Borisenko to explore avenues of bilateral cooperation.
Discussions focused on joint investment in healthcare infrastructure, knowledge exchange, and the deployment of advanced technologies such as telemedicine, mobile clinics, and comprehensive digital medical examinations.
“The expanded collaboration with Russia opens new horizons for medical tourism and joint healthcare investments,” Dr. El-Sobky said. He highlighted plans to establish clinics within the Authority’s family medicine centers, as well as mobile Nile clinics specifically serving Russian visitors.
A cornerstone of the partnership is the proposed creation of an international centre for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors using nuclear medicine and radiotherapy.
This centre, to be integrated into the second phase of Egypt’s comprehensive health insurance system, represents a major investment in high-tech medical services and a foundation for future Egyptian-Russian cooperation in healthcare.
Ambassador Borisenko emphasised Russia’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Egypt, including the transfer and localisation of modern technology within the healthcare system.
“Egypt is a strategic partner within the BRICS group, and over 1.5 million Russians visit annually,” he said, underscoring the potential for medical tourism growth. He also extended an official invitation to Dr. El-Sobky to visit Moscow to further discussions.
Representatives from both sides attended the meeting, including senior officials from the Egyptian Health Authority and the Russian Embassy in Cairo.
The collaboration reflects a broader effort to combine healthcare development with international investment, leveraging expertise and technology transfer to benefit patients and strengthen bilateral ties.
The initiative marks a significant step in Egypt’s ambition to modernise its healthcare sector while positioning itself as a regional destination for advanced medical treatments and strategic international partnerships.
