Benin’s Republican Police have scored another victory in their ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking, seizing 22 kilograms of Indian hemp and arresting two suspects in the early hours of Sunday, 31 August 2025.
According to the police, the operation was carried out at approximately 4 a.m. near the Sodohomè intersection in Bohicon. Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted two men travelling on a motorcycle towards Illara. A search of their belongings uncovered three bags containing forty pellets of Indian hemp, weighing a total of 22 kilograms. One of the suspects was carrying a bag on his back, which also contained part of the illicit substance.
During questioning, the suspects stated they had departed from Azovè and were en route to Illara, located in the commune of Kétou. However, they were unable to present any documentation proving the origin or intended destination of the drugs.
“The suspects have been transferred to the Central Office for the Suppression of Illicit Trafficking in Drugs and Precursors (OCERTID) for further investigation,” the Republican Police confirmed in a statement released via their digital platforms.
Authorities are now working to trace the broader network behind the shipment and determine whether it is linked to larger trafficking operations in the region.
This seizure underscores the increasing vigilance of Benin’s law enforcement agencies as they intensify their fight against the circulation of illegal substances across key transit routes.
