Former students of the 1988–1994 class of the East School, formerly known as Tang Zougou School and later the Mixed School, gathered on Saturday, August 30, 2025, to pay tribute to the teachers who shaped their early education.
Founded in 1958 as the first public school in Koupéla, the East School has long been considered a cornerstone of the town’s educational development. The 1988 cohort began with 75 students, of whom 55 returned for the reunion along with two of their former teachers.
The commemoration featured tree planting on the school grounds, a communal meal, and the presentation of honour rolls to recognise teachers who had a lasting impact on the students’ lives. Among the five teachers of that year, the former principal and one other teacher attended the event, sharing in the expressions of gratitude from their former pupils.
“This initiative is a way of saying thank you to our teachers who have worked to make us who we are today. It also allows us to restore our childhood bonds and build a spirit of brotherhood and solidarity together,” said Légié Sandwidi, president of the organising committee.
Zénabo Koanda, a member of the class, described the reunion as “an excellent idea” that allowed former students “to relive beautiful memories and encourage each other.”
Former school director Moïse Yameogo, moved by the gathering, praised the initiative as “noble and exemplary.” He urged the alumni to remain role models in their respective fields and to continue upholding the educational values instilled during their time at the East School.
The reunion provided a space for the class to reconnect with its shared history and strengthen bonds formed during their formative years. Participants expressed hope that this annual commemoration would continue, highlighting the enduring influence of the East School as a historic educational institution in Koupéla.
The event underscores the importance of recognising teachers’ contributions and maintaining community ties, reinforcing the legacy of one of the town’s most significant educational landmarks.
