Mauritania’s education sector has taken centre stage as President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani toured several schools under construction in Nouakchott on Saturday, signalling a firm commitment to educational reform.
Minister of Education and School System Reform, Hoda Babah, described the presidential visits as “a clear demonstration of the attention and care he devotes to advancing the education sector.”
She emphasized that the tour reflects “a serious will to improve the reality of education through enhanced infrastructure, provision of textbooks, and other measures included in the ongoing education reform plan.”
The minister explained that the new institutions aim to expand student capacity and provide improved learning environments. She highlighted the president’s attention to even the smallest details during the inspections, noting that he examined the quality of tables and classroom equipment.
“This reflects his focus on the quality of education and the conditions in which it is delivered,” Babah said.
The visits are part of the government’s urgent programme for the development of Nouakchott, which prioritizes school construction as a cornerstone for improving educational outcomes. Authorities hope that by enhancing infrastructure and resources, students will benefit from safer, more effective learning environments, helping to address overcrowding and gaps in facilities.
Minister Babah also underlined that these measures are integrated within a broader strategy to modernize Mauritania’s educational system, combining physical improvements with curriculum reforms, teacher training, and access to learning materials.
Observers say the president’s direct involvement sends a strong message about the government’s determination to place education at the forefront of national development, positioning it as a key driver of future economic growth and social progress.
By personally engaging with ongoing school projects, the leadership seeks to ensure that reforms are not merely administrative but translated into tangible benefits for students, teachers, and communities across the capital.
The initiative is expected to accelerate the implementation of the education plan, reinforcing Mauritania’s broader ambitions to elevate the standard of learning nationwide.
