Tonnes of used car parts bound for Senegal seized in Lille

Customs officers in Lille intercepted 49 tonnes of used car parts on June 14 destined for illegal export to Senegal, according to a statement released by officials.

The parts, in extremely poor condition, were discovered during a routine inspection of the port area by around thirty customs officers, the statement explained, released on Thursday.

The export of used car parts to Senegal is prohibited, prompting authorities to refer the case to the Lille prosecutor’s office.

The statement reiterated that French customs enforce the Basel Convention, which regulates cross-border transfers of waste and prohibits the export of waste to countries lacking suitable recycling capabilities.

In 2023, French customs seized over 95,000 tonnes of waste, underscoring ongoing efforts to enforce international waste management regulations.
