Chad’s government has expressed profound sorrow following a devastating traffic accident in the village of Nahaina, located 30 kilometers south of Bongor in the Samga sub-prefecture.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Thursday, 29 August 2025, and claimed the lives of six children.
According to a government press release, a Mercedes ATROS tractor-trailer traveling at high speed struck seven children who were standing by the roadside.
Five children died immediately at the scene, while two others were rushed to the local health center. One of those hospitalized later succumbed to injuries, bringing the total fatalities to six.
The seventh child remains in serious condition.
Authorities confirmed that the driver attempted to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended by security forces.
In response to the tragedy, the government extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expressed solidarity with the Nahaina community. Officials also wished a swift recovery for the child who remains hospitalized.
“All necessary measures are being taken to fully investigate this case,” the press release stated, adding that road safety protocols would be reinforced to prevent similar incidents.
The government also called on all road users to exercise greater vigilance and strictly adhere to traffic regulations, underlining that road safety is a collective responsibility.
This accident highlights ongoing concerns over traffic safety in Chad, particularly in rural areas where vehicles often travel at high speeds on poorly monitored roads.
Local authorities have reiterated their commitment to implementing stricter traffic controls and community awareness programs to protect vulnerable road users, especially children.
The tragic loss of young lives in Nahaina has sparked national reflection on road safety and the urgent need for measures to prevent future accidents.
