Burkina Faso has rolled out a nationwide road safety campaign, introducing breathalyzer tests as part of a renewed effort to curb traffic accidents and fatalities.
The Ministry of Security announced that the operation, running from August 10 to September 6, 2025, will focus on major cities including Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso, and Koudougou.
The campaign intensifies the enforcement of traffic laws, with particular attention to drivers’ blood alcohol levels. Teams were deployed across Ouagadougou during the night of August 28–29, carrying out systematic roadside checks on key city arteries.
“The introduction of the breathalyzer has been very well received by road users,” a ministry spokesperson said. “Many citizens have expressed appreciation for the initiative and urged everyone to adopt responsible driving practices to improve road safety.”
Authorities stressed that the operation is not limited to alcohol checks.
Roadside interventions will also monitor compliance with speed limits, the use of mobile phones while driving, proper lighting, and the hours of operation for certain categories of three- and four-wheeled vehicles.
Safety awareness campaigns, including the promotion of helmet use for motorcyclists, form a key component of the effort.
The ministry hopes that this comprehensive approach will lead to a measurable reduction in road accidents and casualties in Burkina Faso’s urban centers. “Our aim is to foster a culture of responsibility on the roads,” the spokesperson added, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting citizens and promoting safer urban mobility.
The campaign reflects growing concerns over traffic-related injuries and deaths, which remain a pressing public health issue across West Africa. By combining stricter enforcement with public awareness measures, Burkina Faso aims to set a benchmark for road safety initiatives in the region.
Officials have called on all drivers to cooperate with the authorities, respect traffic regulations, and contribute to creating a safer environment for all road users. The initiative underscores the government’s proactive approach to urban safety and its commitment to preventing avoidable accidents.
