Lafarge Holcim Ivory coast has launched the country’s first national masonry competition, aiming to celebrate the profession while providing training and recognition to builders who form the backbone of the construction industry.
In an interview, Gilles Thalmas, Head of Marketing at Lafarge Holcim Côte d’Ivoire, explained the purpose behind this pioneering initiative. “Masons are key players in the construction industry: they are the ones who transform cement into solid, durable, and safe structures. Yet, this profession is often learned on the job, without any real structure or recognition,” he said.
The event, known as the Bélier Mason competition and held in July 2025, sought to strengthen ties with the masonry community, provide training, and elevate the profession. According to Mr Thalmas, the response exceeded expectations. “The success of this first edition confirmed our choice: the masons responded, and the public understood the importance of promoting this profession. Because a well-trained mason is the guarantee of a well-executed construction, and therefore of a safer and more sustainable habitat for all,” he added.
The competition highlighted the talent and potential of artisans across the country, showcasing the quality of work that can be achieved with proper materials and technical advice. LafargeHolcim now plans to expand the initiative, turning Maçon Bélier into a national institution.
“Absolutely, our ambition is to make Maçon Bélier a true national institution. We want to create a strong community of trained masons, capable of using our products optimally and applying best practices for implementation and safety,” Mr Thalmas stated.
The company plans to roll out training programs across Ivory Coast in the coming weeks, covering cement handling, construction site safety, and application techniques. Future editions will involve more cities, enhanced tests, and greater media visibility to spotlight participants.
Looking ahead, LafargeHolcim Côte d’Ivoire aims to consolidate its iconic Ciment Bélier brand by strengthening its connection with artisans, advancing digital tools, and introducing more environmentally friendly products. “Celebrating masons means building trust and the future of an entire industry,” said Mr Thalmas.
