Two men involved in a series of robberies in Zinvié have been sentenced to five years in prison by the Abomey-Calavi Court of First Instance. The judgment was handed down on Thursday, August 21, following a case that highlighted growing concerns over local security.
The suspects, both previously known to the courts, were arrested in June 2025 after stealing a motorcycle from a secured location.
The vehicle belonged to a police officer, and the theft occurred under the cover of night, prompting an immediate investigation by the Zinvié Republican Police.
“The investigation quickly led to the identification of the perpetrators,” a police spokesperson said.
Further inquiries revealed that the men were responsible for additional criminal acts in the area, including the snatching of a bag containing 110,000 CFA francs and a mobile phone from a local shop.
Authorities confirmed that all stolen items were recovered thanks to the prompt actions of the investigators.
“Their diligence allowed us to restore the stolen property to the victims,” the spokesperson added.
The case has drawn attention to Zinvié residents, who have expressed relief at the swift resolution. Many welcomed the court’s firm stance, hoping it will serve as a deterrent against future criminal activity in the community.
Local law enforcement emphasized the importance of community cooperation in addressing crime.
“This outcome demonstrates that crime will not go unpunished when the public and police work together,” the spokesperson said, calling on residents to continue reporting suspicious activity.
The Abomey-Calavi Court’s decision underscores the authorities’ commitment to maintaining law and order in Benin, particularly in areas where repeated criminal incidents threaten public safety.
The five-year sentence reflects both the seriousness of the crimes and the need for a strong judicial response to curb growing insecurity.
This case marks another step in Benin’s ongoing efforts to strengthen policing and improve security across the country, ensuring that perpetrators of theft and robbery face appropriate legal consequences.
