Egypt has launched a seventh special train to support the voluntary return of Sudanese citizens and their families, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The initiative, coordinated by the Egyptian National Railways Authority, aims to provide a safe and organised journey for hundreds of Sudanese travelers heading back to their country.
The train departed from Cairo station in the morning and arrived in the evening at the High Dam river port station, from where passengers will continue their journey to Sudan.
In response to increased demand, the railways authority added extra luggage carriages and deployed teams to assist the elderly and people with reduced mobility.
“This train is part of the solidarity between the two nations, offering support to Sudanese citizens,” the Egyptian National Railways Authority said in a statement. The seventh departure brings the total number of Sudanese passengers assisted this year to 6,668.
The humanitarian operation comes as Sudanese nationals return following military advances, including the liberation of several areas and the capital, Khartoum, earlier this year.
According to the International Organization for Migration, approximately 165,000 Sudanese have returned from Egypt since the beginning of 2025.
Egypt has hosted a significant number of Sudanese refugees since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan on April 15, 2023. United Nations Refugee Agency figures indicate that as of March 31, 2025, some 672,930 Sudanese were residing in Egypt, out of a total of nine million displaced people across the region.
The railway operation underscores a continued humanitarian effort between the two neighbouring nations. Officials emphasised that the service is reserved exclusively for this operation, highlighting Egypt’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of Sudanese citizens.
Beyond logistical support, the initiative reflects a broader regional effort to manage the displacement crisis, combining transport facilitation with targeted assistance for vulnerable travelers. Authorities stressed that the operation would continue as long as necessary, aiming to streamline the return process and provide orderly assistance to those affected by the conflict in Sudan.
The programme is part of a series of coordinated steps designed to address the ongoing humanitarian needs and facilitate the reintegration of Sudanese citizens returning home safely.
