Huawei launches smart village project in southern Zambia

Huawei Technologies has launched a pioneering smart village project in Namwala District, southern Zambia, marking a significant step towards digital development in the Southern African nation.

The initiative, which includes a communication tower and a solar system capable of powering numerous households, represents Zambia’s first venture into smart village technology.

“We express our sincere gratitude to Huawei Technologies Zambia for their support, which aligns with our government’s digital agenda aimed at bringing development to rural areas,” stated Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema during the launch ceremony.

At the event, the Chinese technology firm also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Zambian government to establish 100 smart villages across the country’s ten provinces.

“This project exemplifies the commitment of the Zambian government and Chinese companies to enhancing digitization promises made during President Hichilema’s state visit to China last year,” remarked Wang Sheng, Charge d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Zambia.

According to Wang Sheng, the creation of 100 smart villages is expected to provide electricity and internet access to 400,000 villagers and generate over 5,000 new jobs.

Phil Li, Vice President of Huawei for Southern Africa, affirmed the company’s readiness to collaborate with diverse partners in bridging Zambia’s digital divide and advancing the country’s digital transformation.

“This smart village project marks the beginning of Huawei’s efforts to ensure no Zambian village is left behind in access to electricity,” explained Mr. Li.

The initiative underscores Huawei’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable development and economic empowerment in Zambia, aiming to uplift rural communities through enhanced connectivity and innovative solutions.
