Authorities in Moundou, Chad’s second-largest city, have mobilized local leaders to strengthen the fight against cholera amid ongoing concerns over public health risks.
On August 23, 2025, Deputy Mayor Djonkeye Hubert convened a critical meeting with municipal district administrators and neighborhood representatives to raise awareness and coordinate preventive measures against the disease.
During the session, participants were reminded of the urgent need to adopt hygiene and sanitation practices to protect citizens. Djégolé Béassemda, Technical Director of the Moundou Urban Roads Department, highlighted the connection between poverty and the spread of cholera, warning that “cholera thrives where poverty reigns.”
He emphasized that awareness and proper health practices are essential to limiting outbreaks.
Mbaidéyo Ngonsara Pascal, coordinator of the Green Observatory and a guest consultant, urged local leaders to remain vigilant in promoting hygiene, promptly report suspicious cases to authorities, and actively engage in forthcoming neighborhood awareness campaigns.
Deputy Mayor Djonkeye Hubert stressed the collective responsibility in combating cholera, saying, “the fight against cholera involves everyone,” and called for coordinated action to prevent further spread.
Municipal authorities highlighted the central role of local leaders in mobilizing communities and ensuring effective communication on health measures.
The meeting also included the Health Delegate of Logone Occidental and the Chief Medical Officer of the Moundou Health District, signaling a unified commitment between local government and health authorities.
Together, they outlined strategies to educate residents, improve sanitation practices, and monitor at-risk areas, particularly those vulnerable to flooding or poor water supply.
This initiative forms part of broader efforts in Chad to combat recurrent cholera outbreaks, which have historically affected both urban and rural areas.
Officials hope that by empowering local leaders and fostering community engagement, Moundou can reduce the incidence of the disease and strengthen public health resilience.
With cholera continuing to pose a threat during the rainy season, authorities emphasize that vigilance, hygiene, and timely reporting are critical to safeguarding the health of Moundou’s residents.
