Cape Verde celebrates 49 years of independence, honours WHO and cultural icons

Cape Verde’s President, José Maria Neves, paid tribute to the World Health Organization (WHO) and notable musicians for their contributions to the nation’s identity and development.

President Neves highlighted the pivotal role of freedom fighters and the unwavering dedication of Cape Verdeans in rebuilding the country.

He emphasized the significance of international solidarity, acknowledging the crucial support from countries and organizations, particularly the UNDP, since independence.

The WHO, a vital partner since 1976, received the prestigious Order of Amílcar Cabral for its substantial impact on the nation’s healthcare sector.

Daniel Kertesz, WHO representative in Cape Verde, expressed gratitude, noting a 25-year increase in life expectancy since independence.

Cultural groups and musicians who inspired and mobilized the population during the independence struggle were also honored.

“Os Tubarões” and composers Daniel Grande and Alcides Brito were recognized for their contributions to Cape Verdean culture and identity.

António Lima, speaking on behalf of the musicians, emphasized the role of music in raising awareness and promoting civic engagement.

President Neves praised the awardees, stating, “These songs have taught us to love Cape Verde more deeply and to be more patriotic. They have instilled in us the idea of civic engagement in building a new Cape Verde.”
