Belife Insurance in Ivory Coast has taken a significant step in environmental stewardship by launching a reforestation operation in Kongofon, Brofodoumé, on 22 August 2025.
The initiative aims to plant over 250 trees along the La Mé River, in collaboration with the environmental association Les Écologistes de la Mé.
This effort forms part of the company’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, marking one of its first initiatives since transitioning to pan-African governance. It demonstrates a commitment to environmental protection and highlights the insurer’s ambition to go beyond its traditional role by contributing actively to ecological preservation.
The reforestation project covered two sites, measuring 0.40 hectares and 0.54 hectares respectively. Local species including teak, Melina, and acacia mangium were planted with the active participation of employees, partners, local authorities, and community members.
Michael Souhone, HR Director of Belife Insurance, representing the CEO, praised the “massive” staff involvement and described tree planting as “a meaningful act, a commitment to a healthy and pleasant climate, a legacy for future generations.” He added, “We believe that insurance is not just about protecting property and lives, but also about protecting our resources and planting the seeds of change for a sustainable country.
This is a bold and eco-responsible approach.”
Koma Achou Donald, president of Les Écologistes de la Mé, described the initiative as a “concrete gesture in favour of nature and environmental protection,” noting that it would help reduce erosion, limit river pollution, and mitigate climate change impacts. He also called for further collaboration with other committed partners to expand such projects.
Daniel Brigandar, director of the La Mé factory and sponsor of the association, said, “Today, by planting trees, we are sowing hope. We are building the future, offering our children and grandchildren a living and lasting legacy.”
Gilles Feuillade, Director General of the Ivorian Water and Environment Company (SIEE) and Veolia, highlighted the symbolic and practical significance of the project. “Every tree we plant today will be a lung for our territory tomorrow, a refuge for biodiversity, and the protection of our rivers. It is a legacy for our children,” he said.
The reforestation drive is being promoted as a model for collaboration between businesses, associations, and citizens, aiming to accelerate Ivory Coast’s ecological transition and inspire a greener future.
