The Gambia has taken a significant step to support frontline workers with the launch of a Priority Banking and Concessionary Financing Scheme by Arab Gambian Islamic Bank (Agib).
The initiative, unveiled at the bank’s new head office on Kairaba Avenue, aims to provide fast-track banking services and tailored financial benefits to national security personnel and medical professionals across the country.
“Quite simply, this means no more waiting in line,” said Public Sector Officer Malick Mboob during the launch event, emphasising that the scheme is designed to save time and reduce stress for those on the frontlines.
Agib becomes the first bank in The Gambia to grant queuing privileges to these sectors.
Chief Finance Officer Fatou Ceesay highlighted the scheme’s broader significance. “We appreciate the men and women of our armed and security services, as well as doctors, nurses and midwives, for their invaluable contribution,” she said.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting those who maintain security and deliver healthcare.”
Under the scheme, beneficiaries can access a range of concessions, including waived charges on key banking services, zero Commission on Turnover (COT) for salaries below GMD 20,000, no legal or management fees, free ATM cards, and free first checkbooks.
Transactions can also be conducted using a warrant card or medical ID, streamlining banking for active personnel.
The initiative has drawn praise from government representatives. Ministry of Health official Gibril Jarju said, “By introducing this initiative, Agib Bank is not only recognising our hard work but also helping us save valuable time we can devote to caring for patients.”
Similarly, National Security Adviser representative Molie Colley described the scheme as “one of the greatest innovations in the banking sector,” noting that it allows officers to focus more on national security without being held up by long queues.
The launch concluded with calls for eligible personnel to open accounts and take advantage of the benefits. Agib Bank reaffirmed its commitment to providing inclusive, sharia-compliant financial services that support the country’s key service sectors.
