Authorities in Benin have taken decisive action against gas stations supplying inaccurate fuel volumes, sealing several faulty pumps in the municipalities of Comè and Lokossa in the Mono department.
The intervention, carried out by the National Agency for Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control (ANM), forms part of an ongoing campaign to ensure compliance with metrological standards.
Inspections at multiple service stations revealed that some fuel pumps were delivering less fuel than indicated on their meters, directly harming consumers and violating established regulations. In response, the ANM ordered the immediate decommissioning of the offending pumps, pending replacement with compliant equipment, and imposed fines on the operators responsible.
Mouhamed Nazif Moutawakilou, Director of the ANM, emphasised the agency’s commitment to protecting users’ rights. “We will never give up in this fight for consumer protection,” he said.
He also announced that random checks will continue to verify that fuel dispensed corresponds accurately to the quantity displayed.
This latest operation echoes a similar initiative conducted last January in the Atlantique and Littoral departments. At that time, inspections in Cotonou and Abomey-Calavi uncovered pumps operating “outside the reading zone,” consistently delivering less fuel than indicated—a practice considered fraudulent and damaging to public trust.
For the ANM, monitoring measuring instruments in commercial transactions is a critical part of its mandate.
By ensuring compliance with national standards, the agency aims to safeguard the population from deception while promoting confidence in the fuel sector.
Consumer protection remains a top priority, and authorities have signalled that further inspections will be carried out across Benin to prevent recurrence of such malpractice. The operation in Mono demonstrates the government’s determination to enforce transparency and integrity in everyday commercial transactions, sending a strong message to operators across the country.
