Mali's diplomatic triumph: Elected vice-president of Expo 2025 steering committee in Japan

Mali has been honored in Japan with the election of Massoudou Cissé, Director General of Mali’s Export Agency (Apex-Mali), to the position of Vice-President of the Steering Committee for Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan.

Mr. Cissé secured 130 out of 197 votes, surpassing his American counterpart in a closely watched election process.

“I am deeply honored by this election and grateful to the Expo 2025 Osaka Committee for their trust. As Vice-President, I pledge to work closely with our international partners to make Expo 2025 a transformative event that inspires and unites nations towards a sustainable and inclusive future.

Mali is proud to contribute to this global effort, sharing our unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities ahead,” stated Mr. Cissé in his initial remarks following the election in Asafa, Japan.

Expo 2025 Osaka will be held under the theme “Designing Future Society, Imagining Your Life” and aims to serve as a global platform showcasing innovations and solutions for a better future.

Representatives from nearly 200 countries across five continents will participate, highlighting the event’s global significance.

The establishment of the Steering Committee, crucial for coordinating preparations, involved intricate diplomatic negotiations among representatives from 197 nations.

While Switzerland was entrusted with the presidency, all eyes were on the vice-presidential seat, fiercely contested between the United States and Africa.

Mr. Cissé’s candidacy was supported by the collective backing of 54 African and Caribbean nations, alongside Arab countries, underscoring regional unity and support.

His extensive experience as Vice-President of Expo 2023 in Doha and proven leadership in international forums positioned him as a formidable candidate.

The overwhelming endorsement with 130 votes not only celebrates Mali’s success but also signifies broader African and Arab pride, showcasing international recognition of Mali’s leadership and commitment to global sustainable development and cooperation.

As Vice-President of the Steering Committee, Mr. Cissé will play a pivotal role in coordinating international efforts to ensure the success of Expo 2025 Osaka, the supreme regulatory body for World Expos.

His appointment reflects Mali’s growing influence on the international stage, providing a unique opportunity to spotlight Mali’s innovative initiatives across various sectors such as technology, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and culture.

This prestigious role not only underscores Mali’s international stature but also presents a strategic platform to enhance bilateral cooperation with the host country and promote Mali’s exportable offerings on a global stage.
