Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on Kenyans to actively support county governments, highlighting their role in advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice across the country.
Speaking at the ongoing Devolution Conference in Homa Bay County, Waiguru underscored the transformative impact of devolved governance, particularly in previously marginalized rural areas.
“Counties have made great strides in realizing the devolution dream despite inadequate resources,” she said, emphasizing that the future of Kenya depends on empowering local governments to manage and distribute resources effectively.
Waiguru also acknowledged the persistent challenges counties face, citing delayed fund disbursements and limited financial resources as key obstacles. “Inadequate resources and late funding remain major issues, but with continued public support, counties can deliver more effectively,” she noted.
Addressing the broader issue of corruption, the governor described it as a deep-rooted societal problem affecting all sectors, from government institutions to the private sector and civil society.
“This is not a problem you can just point in one direction. It is a societal challenge that must be addressed as a whole,” she said, urging collective action to eradicate the vice.
Highlighting Kirinyaga County as a model of devolution success, Waiguru showcased key achievements in agriculture, healthcare, and community empowerment.
The county has emerged as Kenya’s top rice producer and has made significant strides in dairy production, with cooperatives now processing, packaging, and marketing products to increase farmers’ incomes.
“These programs have transformed livelihoods and demonstrated the potential of devolved governance when effectively managed,” she added, urging other counties to adopt similar initiatives to enhance local development.
Waiguru’s remarks come amid ongoing national discussions on strengthening devolution and improving public sector efficiency. By showcasing Kirinyaga’s successes, she hopes to inspire greater citizen engagement and underscore the importance of county governments in driving sustainable growth and equitable development across Kenya.
The governor concluded with a call for unity, urging Kenyans to support counties in their mandate to deliver services, reduce inequalities, and foster social cohesion throughout the nation.
