At the Bassa High School Alumni Association U.S.A. Inc.’s annual convention, held in Philadelphia, alumnus Emmanuel Nuku Reeves made a stirring call for deeper engagement with his alma mater, pledging a generous $20,000 donation to support the school’s future.
The convention, themed “Bridging Generations: Our Story, Our Stride, Our Success,” united former students in a shared mission to uplift the next generation.
Reeves, who graduated as salutatorian in 1971, opened his address by reflecting on the school’s lasting impact on Grand Bassa County, Liberia.
“Today our dreams have been transformed into doctors, nurses, lawyers, accountants, politicians, teachers, engineers, diplomats, entrepreneurs—all from that sacred ground,” he said. “That is our story!”
The event raised nearly $46,000 in total, funds earmarked for meaningful improvements at Bassa High School.
The association’s financial secretary emphasised that the contributions would support initiatives designed to enhance the school’s infrastructure and student welfare.
While praising past alumni efforts—scholarships, renovations, electricity installation, and healthcare facilitation—Reeves challenged the community to “do more, and… do it differently.” He urged graduates to move beyond symbolic support by actively mentoring students and partnering with school leadership in planning its future.
“Buildings may rise, and walls may shine; but hearts need tending, and minds need time,” Reeves stated. He encouraged alumni to “adopt needy students” and become hands-on collaborators rather than distant observers.
Reeves also called on the current association leaders to embrace innovation and inclusivity. “To the current leadership of this noble Association, I challenge you to lead with deeper engagement and fresh collaboration by making space for new ideas and stronger voices,” he said.
He concluded with a powerful message: “What we owe Bassa High is not just pride in her past, but faith in her future.” Presenting a $20,000 cheque alongside his wife Serena B. Reeves, he implored fellow alumni to “rekindle the fire and make it roar again.”
Bassa High School, founded in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, remains a vital institution in Liberia’s educational landscape. Though damaged during the civil war, it has resumed its pivotal role in nurturing generations of professionals. The alumni association’s commitment signals renewed hope for sustained growth and excellence.
